Boston Roll Call Music Festival returned to the Harvard Athletics Complex during Memorial Day weekend 2022 for its first iteration since 2019. Although the eclectic lineup changed several times due to inclement weather, COVID-19 and other factors, festival fans enjoyed performances by Metallic, Nine inch nails (x2), Weezer, Run the Jewels, SOIL RÜFÜS, black pumas, modest mouse, April Lavigne, HAIIM, cheap stuff, goose, Spacersand more.
The festival kicked off on Friday with sets from RÜFÜS DU SOL, HAIM, Avril Lavigne, Cheap Trick, olive treespacers, Paris-Jackson, Grandson, Backseat Lovers, ParisTexas, rich crowd, Bobble Squad, Born without bones, street, Miranda Raeand The Chelsea Curve. Boston Calling’s 2022 opening day lineup was originally scheduled to feature foo fighters as its headliner.
When the band’s drummer, Taylor Hawkinspassed away earlier this year and the band canceled all upcoming tour dates, the festival announced that Nine Inch Nails would fill the vacant slot. Trent Reznor and company made their home on Friday night, shaking audiences with their patent industrial rock hits.
“We are very happy to be here with you tonight and to share this moment with you,” Reznor said of the situation. “And we are very sorry for the conditions that brought us to be here, with our friends the Foo Fighters. Our hearts go out to them.
On Saturday, Nine Inch Nails once again saved the day after a positive case of COVID-19 forced scheduled headliners Shots retire at the eleventh hour. While Friday’s performance covered many of the band’s classics, Saturday’s impromptu set saw the band dig into a host of deeper cuts. King Gizzard and the Lizard Sorcerer also canceled their scheduled appearance on Saturday due to a case of COVID-19 within the group.
Saturday’s lineup was further shortened by a passing storm, which prompted organizers to briefly evacuate the site. The weather caused the cancellation of sets by France forever, Sudan Archives, Coral Moonsand Ali McGurk. Fans were finally allowed back into the room as the evening continued with performances by Run the Jewels, Black Pumas, Earth Gangand more.
Boston Calling finally ended Sunday with its busiest day. From the start of the day, fans crammed into the room for sets of paper tigers, twisted coast, Peach Rascals, Cultsgoose, modest mouse, glass animalsWeezer, Wall, and more. Finally, the crowd gathered in full force on the main stage for a closing set of the Metallica festival.
