The Real Squeal BBQ & Music Festival ends with a barbecue contest
LYONS, Ga. (WTOC) – It was the second day of the Real Squeal BBQ & Music Festival in Lyon. The festivities kicked off Friday in the city center.
Partin Park was packed with food trucks, a car show and vendors on Saturday.
“Today we’re cooking chicken, ribs, pork and brisket,” said Scott and Deneen Parr, contestants in the barbecue competition.
One of the main events of the 11th Annual Real Squeal is the Showdown for the Best BBQ. Professional teams from across the country spend hours cooking their best dishes in the hope of winning.
“Really, what puts you on stage is what you love to cook the most,” Parr said, with Cool Hand Que.
The Parrs have competed in Real Squeal for the past three years. They said one of the best things about these competitions is the people they meet along the way.
“We started cooking in competitions about four years ago and we love it,” Parr said.
One of Cool Hand Que’s contestants is Lee Hickle of Texas. Hickle said that over the years he had turned a hobby into a passion. By the end of this year, he will have participated in 43 cookoffs along the East Coast.
“I have cooked everywhere. From Chicago to Virginia, Florida, Mississippi and South Carolina, ”said Hickle, along with Redmules BBQ.
Hickle added that it was his first time in Lyon, but that he was delighted to see how his Texan style behaved.
“It’s a really, really good bake,” Hickle said. “I’m glad I came here!”
It doesn’t stop at the delicious barbecue. The event also features face painting, a car show, handmade crafts, and lots of fun for everyone.
