Musical theme for the annual flower festival at St. Peter’s Church

St Peter’s Church, pictured above, will once again become a kaleidoscope of color in September

A historic church will come alive with the sound – and sight – of music later this year. Every September, St Peter’s Church in South Hanningfield, Essex, is filled with beautifully designed floral creations for its annual three-day flower festival.

And this year’s event – taking place September 3-5 – will be themed around musicals. As usual, organizer Sylvia Roberts from Wickford, Essex, and her talented team will fill the church, which dates back to the 12th century, with colorful and imaginative designs based on the theme, using both flowers and accessories.

Visitors can expect to see Carousel, My Fair Lady, Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, The Mikado, The Greatest Showman, Frozen and Wicked and more translated into floral designs.

“It’s going to be a very exciting year,” said Sylvia. “We have 10 very talented women and we have chosen modern and old musicals and we will illustrate them with flowers and colors.

“I chose the music for all to be played outside and in the church.

“I’m doing the Phantom of the Opera and I’m going to build the maze. I’m going to create this rather spooky place – as well as the flowers, I’m building all the props.

“And we have two small children doing Peter Pan, so it’s going to be very colorful – it always is – and very enjoyable “Our visitors will go to a beautiful, old church perched on top of a hill overlooking the reservoir. “

There will also be a party in the church grounds and homemade food will be available.

The money raised during the event will be used for the upkeep and upkeep of the church. Last year’s event raised £5,000 which was welcome after the 2020 show had to be canceled due to Covid restrictions.

There is no registration fee but donations are welcome.

Anyone who can help with sponsorship is asked to send checks payable to South Hanningfield PCC to Sylvia Roberts, 33 Carlton Road, Wickford, Essex SS11 7NB.

The flower festival is open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 September and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday.

There will be a worship service in the church at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
