(Cannon Beach, Oregon) – A first of its kind on the North Oregon Coast, a new festival at Cannon Beach combines the environment and the art world in this former artist colony. From September 16 to 19, the city is celebrating this unique blend with the Earth & Ocean Arts Festival.

One of the main events here is a live art project that will create the world’s largest starfish made up entirely of people. After all, Cannon Beach is a market town where art and the natural environment meet in a particularly visible way.

Look for these highlights:

Live performance installations and touring artists: Various public venues in Cannon Beach are becoming participatory theater thanks to the efforts of award-winning San Francisco band We Players. It is a nationally recognized ensemble for its unique way of integrating venues into theatrical production. Look for them to perform parts of their sold-out PSYCHOPOMP production, where the group creates vibrant and unforgettable mythological characters.

Art For the Sky to Create the World’s Largest Starfish: The public is invited to be a part of this, as people form together on this beach on the North Oregon Coast and become a gigantic starfish – a living painting. The live art project will be coordinated by Art for the Sky, a group known for their large-scale and individualistic creations, with people photographed from the sky. In twenty years, the founder of Art for the Sky, Daniel Dancer, has completed more than 300 projects, in 44 states and eight countries, with the help of more than 150,000 participants.

Double Easels: A Unique Painting Experience: Participants watch painters Michael Orwick and Anton Pavlenko, with their own distinct styles and color palettes, simultaneously start painting and then change canvas several times before finishing the canvases.

Gallery Events: Each of Cannon Beach’s art galleries will showcase the work of their artists with strong connections to the environment over the weekend and several galleries will host special guest artists who will offer demonstrations and meet the public.

Farm-to-Fork Dinner and We Players Performance: Iron Chef Goes Coastal winner Jonathan Hoffman will host this exclusive, limited-attendance culinary event that will also include a performance by San Francisco-based theater group We Players, who will perform an uplifting tribute of songs and stories about our ocean environment. The cost is $ 150, a fundraiser for the festival’s five star nonprofits.

Raku Pottery Shot on the Beach: Ending with an explosion of flames and smoke that creates the iridescent glow of raku pottery, ceramic artists Dave and Boni Deal will shoot a raku piece on the beach for the audience to watch see.

In addition to showcasing art inspired by the natural world and encouraging stewardship, Earth & Ocean Arts Festival is a fundraiser for five environmental nonprofits based on the North Oregon Coast, including : North Coast Land Conservancy, Wildlife Center of the North Coast, Friends of Haystack Rock, Sea Turtles Forever and Friends of Cape Falcon Marine Reserve.

Festival passes cost $ 50 per person and include all festival events (except Thursday dinner) and entry to a raffle valued at $ 500 in gift certificates to be used in participating galleries in Cannon Beach. A total of $ 25 from each festival pass sold will be donated directly to participating nonprofits. Admission to festival events is free for children 12 and under, with the exception of dinner on Thursday. Adults and children can participate in the live art of Starfish Art For The Sky for free by registering online.
