Annual feast of the Basilica of Notre-Dame des Neiges to be celebrated without the faithful
The 439th annual festival of Notre-Dame des Neiges Basilica, which will begin on July 26 with the hoisting of the flag, will take place without the participation of parishioners this year also due to the lockdown restrictions induced by COVID-19.
The annual celebration which would begin with the hoisting of the flag on July 26 will end with the high mass which will be celebrated on August 5. Since the lockdown restrictions were imposed in March 2020, the celebrations were held last year without the participation of worshipers. However, all of the celebrations were broadcast live on YouTube and local TV channels.
With COVID-19 restrictions still in place with the threat of a ‘third wave’ looming, District Collector K. Senthil Raj chaired a meeting at the Collectorate on Thursday attended by Police Superintendent S Jayakumar, Minister of Social Protection P Geetha Jeevan and Bishop of Thoothukudi RC Diocese Mgr. Etienne Antoine.
Ms Geetha, while addressing the meeting, said that all prayers and celebrations would take place in the basilica as the government had granted some flexibilities, but without the participation of parishioners, who could see and participate in prayers and masses which will be televised. live. âWe ask for everyone’s cooperation in this regard,â she said.
Speaking to reporters at the end of the meeting, Mgr. Stephen Antony said the flag hoisting would be carried out without people’s participation on July 26 and Holy Masses would be held as usual and parishioners would not be allowed to participate due to COVID-19 restrictions. The flag procession, the Eucharistic procession and the car festival would not take place this year.
âWe call on everyone to participate fervently in these celebrations through an online platform, as we have made significant arrangements for online television of sacred events. Let us pray together to the Blessed Blessed Mother to appease this pandemic situation â, Mgr. said Etienne Antoine.
However, worshipers can visit the church in a regulated manner to offer their prayers when there has not been a holy event, he noted.
Kannapiraan District Revenue Officer, Rector of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Basilica Rev. Kumar Raja and members of the parish council were present.
